About: This animation was created in response to the proposed theme of “Apart but Together” for the 2020 Vesalius Trust-a-thon Vesalius Trust fundraising event. The team was inspired by the collective resilience, supportive community, and eager collaboration medical artists have demonstrated throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Even when biomedical visualization teams may not be physically together, they can still efficiently collaborate to produce beautiful and informative biomedical visuals.

LOOK & FEEL DEVELOPMENT

Color: I created several bright, friendly color palettes and narrowed each down to create a high saturation gold, green, pink, and periwinkle palette with a large range of values.

UI design: We chose to focus the animation on four users who used both Mac and Windows operating systems. I designed the assets and UI mockups for the first two users, Max Brödel and Tom Jones.

Easter Eggs: I decided sneak in some medical illustration history by making each user a founder of one of the four accredited medical illustration graduate programs. I also made the timestamp on each PC the year that the respective program was founded. Finally, I included additional hints of medical illustration history in the email subject lines of each user’s inbox. These little details may go unnoticed by a casual observer, but they will definitely make a medical illustrator smile.
